This past summer, me and a lady that I was dating at the time took a friend and his wife to see Fuel at The Wheelhouse in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The initial buzz amongst us was that Fuel was getting back together with a new guitarist, with Brett Scallions reunited with the band, and the original bassist from Shinedown. We went there stoked to see Fuel in such an intimate venue that doubled as a nightclub. However, we left there seeing one of the most mindblowing performances we had ever seen in our lives. The mindblowing performance wasn’t from Fuel, but from the Bay Area band known as Park Lane.

Park Lane is comprised of Carley Coma(ex-Candiria frontman) on vocals, Mike Keller on guitars, Grayson Hurd on guitars, Cameron Stucky on drums, and Clayton Wages on the bass. Their performance left the hair on the back of my neck stand and goosebumps ensued. I love the feeling of chills tingling down my spine as a song is crafted into a wonderful masterpiece to my ears. Please pick up “Letters From The Fire” on I-Tunes or wherever you can find music these days. Now, prepare to get chills up and down your spine from this song entitled “The Edge”, which is a wonderful story of someone trying to find a positive way out from the depths of personal despair.

Greensboro, North Carolina band DREAMKILLER has just released their latest video entitled “Ragnarok”. “Ragnarok” is off of their concept album entitled “Sleepless Dreams”.
This particular track showcases DREAMKILLER at their finest. They draw in a theatrical and a rock-musical influence into their music. They keep their lyrical contenct as positive as possible for the listener, in which they sing about rising up and overcoming the obstacles of life. I see this band doing very well for themselves in the future as they have won awards and been nominated in the Carolina Music Awards and the Los Angeles Music Awards, and they can boast of an appearance on the Vans Warped Tour.
In conclusion, their musicianship is sleek and the guitars are driven by pure, raw power. Christy Johnson has a very strong voice and her voice boasts of an impressive range. Check out this mindblowing jam below. Please “like” DREAMKILLER here.

MASTODON is a sludge metal band formed in 1999 by Brian Dailor and Bill Kelliher. The band consists of 4 members with Troy Sanders on bass and lead vocals, Brent Hinds on guitar and vocals, Kelliher on guitar and back up vocals, and Dailor on drums and vocals. Eric Saner was the original singer but quit the band before they released their first album, “Remission”, that features singles “March of the Fire Ants” and “Crusher/Destroyer”, which was on “Tony Hawk’s Underground” in 2001. The last track of the first 3 albums all refer to “Elephant Man”.

In 2004, “Leviathan”, was released and blew up. It was ranked #1 by Kerrang! and Terrorizer. The single “Blood and Thunder” was released, named one of the most influential recordings of the century by National Public radio, and was featured in many video games, including “Guitar Hero: Metallica” and “Need For Speed”. The album’s concept is loosley based on the book “Moby Dick”.

MASTODON’S 3rd album, “Blood Mountain”, was released in 2006. The first single was “Capillarian Crest”, was featured in video games, and rated 27 in Rolling Stones Top 100 songs of 2006. The album was rated the #1 metal album by About.com and The Best Metal Albums of 2006. After performing at the MTV Music Awards, police reports state that an altercation between vocalist Brent Hinds and the bassist from SYSTEM OF A DOWN took place and resulted in a severe head injury for Brent.

In 2009, “Crack the Skye” was released with a whole new sound. The head injury Brent had recieved changed not only his life but the sound of MASTADON. This album is psychedelic and layered in sound but still very heavy. The album is about the out of body experience of a quadriplegic that travels too close to the sun, severs his umbilical cord that attaches him to his body, and floats away into “Oblivion”. He is then found by Rasputin when he and his cult channel spirits to them. Rasputin is then assasinated and returns the quadriplegic home. Of course a huge tour ensued to promote the album, but since then?

Live at the Aragon was released in 2011 and is a live CD/DVD of “Crack the Skye” with additional tracks. The band is currently hard at work on their latest album “The Hunter”. Look forward to seeing it soon. To find out more on the band, including tour dates, please visit their website here.

I really wanted to do this at 0400 this morning when I got home, but I was just too damn beat (boohoo). I got a few hours of sleep and have been sitting here zoning out in the recliner. Octane played some damn good songs on my drive home west along Highway 64, and I just want to share the goodness that I still remember from said travels. Enjoy, or not, or whatever. Rock on:

So, while driving home from “the patch” (oilfield) after a 19 hour day (an hour earlier than expected…BONUS!!!), I was thinking of how far this site has come along and wanted to show my appreciation to the connections I have made, be it from FB, Twitter, or the site in itself. I am an old-fashioned guy but with fresh ears. I have enjoyed diving into the newer sounds of Rock and Metal, and I wanted to share some of the stuff I like to listen to. Remember, I AM being partial here, and in no particular order (except ladies first), here ya go. Rock on:

Alright, so a dear friend of mine is renewing her wedding vows today (actually, our own PeetieBird), me and the family came here to Sedona to partake in the festivities, and I have been jamming a steady play of tunes on my BlackBerry in between the kids swimming, me napping, and the ol’ lady getting pampered. Just thought I’d share (this is that randomness thing we are all about) \m/ \m/

This first tune is not necessarily on my BB, but it is befitting to start off this session. Please enjoy this Willow Smith vs. Kreator mashup entitled ‘Hairbangers’ (It takes me back to a time before I started shaving my head and had the thick, Chewbaca-like locks. The Monk remembers):

So we rolled into town yesterday. I was beat to hell in between the lack of sleep from my other job and the travels, so the family took a swim, and I took a damn nap. I cranked up the tunes on the BB and made sure they shuffled. These are what I remember before I crashed:

The first one here would not be considered a “headbanging jam”, but it is in rotation. The rest are though :)

So now, here I am, sitting here with the kiddos out swimming again, and my wife getting some pampering done with PeetieBird and family, I am really not sure what “mood” I am in, but this is what has played, or is playing now. Rock on y’all. Rock on:

So who the hell is Volbeat? If you haven’t heard the single ‘Still Counting’, it’s a great place to start. They blend metal, punk, rockabilly, and classic rock with some of the cleanest switch-ups I’ve ever heard. Critically acclaimed in their home country of Denmark, they are taking the rock scene by storm.

YouTube Preview Image

They released their first album “The Strength/The Sound/The Songs” in 2005-2006. Little do people know it was the start of a rock opera, with two songs on the album to start the story out. No, I won’t tell you which two. You will have to check for yourself. The album quickly went gold in Denmark.

YouTube Preview Image

In 2007, the band released “Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil”, which quickly went staright to #1 on the music charts in Denmark. They went on tour with big names, including Megadeth and Metallica. This album contains two more songs in the on-going saga. This was the first album released with their new guitarist, Thomas Bredahl.

In 2008, “Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood was released and debuted at #1. They were seen on the main stage at the PinkPop Festival, and the album achieved gold. The album contains one song in the on-going story and also begins another that has people guessing if this new plot is the band VOLBEAT themselves being portrayed as the band Guitar Gangsters, and their front man, Cadillac Blood.

With the newest album Beyond Hell/Above Heaven being released this year, it has already gone platinum. It continues the story where Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood left off. They have been doing some major touring this year. To see the full schedule of tour dates, visit http://www.volbeat.dk/2/index.php.

Another awesome underground Thrash band from way back, like 1984 way back. Jeff Waters is a guitar God, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Annihilator is, was, and always will be his baby. Let us begin this show of love and respect to Canadian Thrash Metal band, Annihilator.

Their first major release came in 1989 called “Alice in Hell”, and it has been re-released twice (1998, 2003). One of my favorites is the title track and actual track 2 on the album.

The next album came the next year and is entitled “Never, Neverland” (same re-releases as “Alice in Hell”). Here’s my favorite from that one. The title track and #5 on the album.

Never, Neverland

Extensive touring, and three years between “Never, Neverland” and this one, “Set the World on Fire”. Yet, they still brought the fury. It was a good graduation theme song for me. Again, the title track and #1 on the album.

Back to the studio and a mere year later came “King of the Kill”. Check out track 1.

Some more touring, then in 1996, they released “Refresh the Demon”. Track 6.

A year passed, and out came “Remains”. Almost everything was done by Jeff Waters on this album except 4 collaborations on certain songs. Check out track 2.

Another touring excursion occurred, then in 1999, Waters reunited the original lineup of the band except the bassist. They came out with “Criteria for a Black Widow”. Bringing back that speed and ferocity, check out track 9.

Another 2 year hiatus from the studio, 2001 saw the release of “Carnival Diablos”. Track 6.

Their 9th album was released in 2002, “Waking the Fury”. Check out track 5.

“Shizo Deluxe” is the 11th album from them. It came out in 2005. Track 1.

In 2007, “Metal” was released, but not until early 2008 did the U.S. see it. This album features many different guest musicians from bands such as Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, and In Flames. Check out track 7.

Finally, in May 2010, came the 13th album, “Annihilator”. It was several months before I actually listened to the album. Another home run. Check out track 4.

That’s it y’all. Through a nonstop influx of vocalists, bassists, rhythm guitarists and drummers, Jeff Waters has stood the test of time, and will continue to do so. The only other constant is the rhythm guitarist since 2003, Dave Padden. Doesn’t matter to me who is or is not there, except for one guy. The one guy who keeps the train rolling and keeps making the badass Thrash that has been brought to my ears for about 27 years, Jeff Waters and his…ANNIHILATOR. Rock on.

This is the shit that dreams are made of. First, it was the Sonisphere Festival. Recently, it was Indio, CA. Now, THEE Big Four of Thrash are doing another show in the U.S., in the Bronx. First, it was said that Sonisphere would be the ONLY time these bands would play together. Recently, it was said that Indio would be the ONLY one in the United States. Now, more dreams are coming true. I’ve heard and read a shitload of grunts and groans when the very first announcement was made for last year. Funny how much those grunts and groans subsided when it was announced they were playing in the states. Say what you will about these bands now or from their early days. They paved the way, and nobody will ever convince me otherwise. For details on tickets and such, click here. It’s looking like it is going to be September 14th at Yankee Stadium. I’ve posted below one song from each band that I consider my own favorite (all were a bitch to decide on) and a video of all four playing ‘Am I Evil?’. Rock on…HARD:

(Contributor’s Note: Upon speaking with the others, I thought it might be a good idea to do an article every so often dedicated to bands, single musicians, t.v. personalities, and movie stars that have seem to “gone quiet”. These will be based on our own curiosities, but I am asking that you give us a chance to answer this question for you also. Just go to the contact form on the main page, fill it out, and give us your ideas for wondering, “Whatever happened To…?”—-OverkillWFO)

RA

Since I first heard ‘Fallen Angels’ from their 2005 release (and second record), “Duality”, I’ve loved almost everything Ra has done since. A beautifully unique and wonderfully creative metal band incorporating exotic Egyptian musicianship with hard and melodic guitar. Sahaj Ticotin’s vocals are his own, sounding like nobody but him and cannot be duplicated.

Upon thoroughly enjoying “Duality”, I had to hear what they had done previously, so I searched for any information on these guys. I came across their album, “From One”, which they released in 2002. Both first albums being done with Universal Records. It’s tough to decide on a single one to play for you all, but here is the one I have chosen.

In 2006, they came out with a live album entitled “Raw” and released by Cement Shoe Records. It had all live tracks, except one, which was to come out on their next full-length album. Below is said release.

Ticotin started his own record label, Sahaja Music Records, and released “Black Sun” in 2008. The album hit #2 on the Heatseekers charts and #30 on the Independent charts. No doubt due to the above single and this one below.

Now, I can’t decide which record I love better, but their 2009 release, “Black Sheep”, is up there. Simply because of the 2 songs below.

So, you may be saying, “Shut the fuck up and tell us what happened to this band.” Well, this is what I know. They re-released “Black Sheep” in 2010 through Sahaj’s label, of course, but with a different song lineup. Sahaj Ticotin is finishing up his solo project, “Sahaj-Another Minute”, with a release date sometime this spring. Afterward (hell yes), Ra will be working on finishing new material with a promising release date on or around Christmas this year.

So never fear, Ra will be back this year.

Robert Lowe. Doom Metal legend and God in his own right. His voice epitomizes what Doom Metal will forever be. The above album. The best in history. Solitude Aeturnus. Last Chapter. Concept of God. Candlemass. Lowe rules. Rock on:
